The importance of setting smart goals

setting smart goals

Setting goals is an important tool we can use to achieve success in our daily lives. Goals help to give us a set objective that we must work hard to achieve. For most persons who don’t seem to set goals in their lives they are the ones who always lack direction or a purpose. If you should look at successful persons most or even all of them set goals. It’s not enough to set goals though; you should ensure that you use the S.M.A.R.T strategy when setting goals. This will ensure that your goals are specific, measurable, attainable, relevant and time based.

Setting smart goals gives you a better benefit over persons who just set goals loosely. Although setting goals loosely is effective, when you set smart goals it will prevent goals that are too unrealistic. Additionally it can probably save you a lot of time wasted on goals that will not add any value to your life. To explain the smart goals in more detail you can see each aspect of it in more detail below.

Specific

Make certain that your goals are specific. When it is specific, it is well defined and you can understand clearly what you are aiming for. I remember I used to set goals back in the past and most of them weren’t well defined. I never set any date on when I am going to achieve it and it was loosely set. It led me to not achieving my goals. Additionally when your goals are specific you will tend to achieve it better because you know exactly where you are going.

Measurable

Ensure that when you’re setting smart goals they are measurable. When your goals are measurable they can be tracked using metrics. So for example suppose you want to lose 100 pounds in the next month. You can break this goal into measurable pieces. So at the end of each week or day you can track the amount of weight you have lost. This will enable you to see how you are performing as it relates to your goals. When you start to see progress on how well you are performing, it will motivate you to even push harder to reach them.

Attainable

Your goals have to also be attainable. When you are evaluating your goals to see how attainable they are you are going to look at the resources, time and effort your goal is going to need in order to achieve it. If they don’t match up, you might want to set a much attainable goal.

Relevant

When setting smart goals. Ensure that they are relevant to your overall life. If your goals are not relevant, it doesn’t make any sense investing the time, resources and effort that’s needed. Make certain that your goal is going to add real value to your life.

Time based

You have to make certain that you set your goal at a specific time that you can achieve it at. Make sure that you give yourself enough time to achieve that goal. You don’t want to set a time too short.  Because when you don’t achieve that goal in time you start to blame yourself. Ensure that it’s timely. Also don’t set it too long term that you start to procrastinate on your goal mid-way through your goal achieving process.

Wrapping up

The information above is probably all you need in order to create smart goals. If you implement this strategy in your goal setting process, you will find that your goals are better and add more value to your life.
